Journey
Abdul Mulaasi, born in Masaka, Uganda, in 1976, carved a unique path in the music industry as a pioneer of urban Kadongo Kamu. His distinct journey melds his identity as a performer with his secretive past as a former child soldier with the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). Rising to fame in the early 2000s, Mulaasi captivated audiences with hits like “Omusono Gwa Mungu,” a track recorded remarkably at the age of six, as well as “Charging” and “Farm.” These successes brought national recognition, leading him to establish Light Production and L.M. Videoz, aiming to secure his creative freedom.
Despite a life entwined with military duties, often performing under vigilant security, Mulaasi’s music redefined Kadongo Kamu by integrating urban sensibilities and global awareness. This fresh take earned him critical acclaim and a strong fanbase across East Africa, remaining a top-ranked artist in the Ugandan music scene throughout the 2000s. Alongside music, he has been a proactive entrepreneur and TV presenter, expanding his influence to include ventures in transport and event services.
Reflecting on his career in a 2023 interview, Mulaasi shared insights into the challenges he faced managing a large entourage early in his career. He emphasized the importance of gratitude and recognising genuine support over monetary gains. Today, Abdul Mulaasi continues to champion artist empowerment and remains active in advocating for reforms in the music industry, standing alongside the Uganda National Musicians’ Federation to support fellow artists in mental health and financial stability.
